A New Ride

Kohlton has been doing really well these past few weeks.  Very busy with physical therapy, doctor's visits, church, movies, restaurants, concerts, plays....etc.  Last week he did his driving evaluation with Strowmatt Rehabilitation Services.  Kohlton did so well that he does not need to take any further instruction and is scheduled to take his driving test with the DPS on April 24th @ 2:00!

Below is a pic of the mini van he found thru Craig's list and will have that fitted with hand controls.  As you can see Muffin, the healer kitty, approves!

A New Toy!

We got a new toy for Kohlton!  It is called a ReadyStalls Frame which allows the unique benefit of standing while simultaneously participating in a variety of upper and lower extremity exercises.  It benefits all of the following:
  • Physical balance and psychological well-being
  • Digestion
  • Reduction of flatulence and improved bowel function
  • Better circulation of the blood
  • Reduced wasting of the muscles
  • Improved muscle tone
  • Reduced loss of calcium from the bones and lower risk of osteoporosis
  • Improved vesicular and renal function
  • Prevention and healing of pressure sores
We are very excited about the equipment.  Garrett Williamson, the designer and who is also a paraplegic, brought and set up the stand personally.  It was awesome to see how much someone can overcome their handicap and create something that is so life changing!

Checking Out!!!

Kohlton has progressed so awesomely that he will be released from TIRR on Saturday!  We are looking forward to having him home again, especially Muffin, our kitty.  She has been whining for him ever since he went back into TIRR!

It is amazing how much K.G. has accomplished and how strong he is.  The staff at TIRR is incredible and very understanding of not only his needs, but also the needs of the family.

Next on the agenda - college!!  Oh, and a vehicle for K.G. to drive.  We are hoping that DARS will step in again and help with both of those.

Thanks again for all the support, warm wishes and prayers.  We are truly blessed!!!

Two and a half weeks in and a lot of milestone accomplished!!  Last week went to a Rugby practice and Kohlton got to try out a sport's wheel chair.  Says it turns really fast!

A few days ago Kohlton was feeling a little under the weather and wrist pain, but is doing much better.  Please continue with your prayers for strength and healing and patience!

It's a beautiful day today!  Go out and enjoy!!

Second Phase

Well, the second phase at TIRR has begun!  Last Monday, January 7th, Kohlton began the hardest work he has ever had to do.   After struggling with the insurance company to cover the cost of inpatient care, the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), has decided to sponsor the second phase for 30 days!!  It is an amazing organization providing many of the services, equipment and educational needs of the handicap.

One week has passed and I can tell that Kohlton is getting stronger each day and accomplishing many of the task that will lead to his independence.  Transfers are no longer an issue nor is the blood pressure.  He told me yesterday that he was able to dress without assistance!!  (I greeted this with mixed emotions realizing he no longer needs his Mommy!)

Again I want to thank everyone for their continued thoughts and prayers.  Especially Andi, who has been such a good friend to me personally.  All of you have been like our personal Fry family guardian angels!

God's peace and blessings,

Nancy

One more hurdle down!

Saw the surgeon today, took an x-ray and all looks great!  The doc said that Kohlton can stop wearing the brace, but suggested taking it slow.  Still having a lot of pain on the upper left side of the back which we hope will subside with adjusting the nerve medication.  The pain seems to zap all of his strength which makes it hard for him to transfer from bed to chair to car, etc.  The plus is that having the brace removed should enable Kohlton to move easier and use all his upper body strength.

Please continue to pray for strength, patience, pain relief and God's miracle to work through all of us!!
